Shall we do lunch?

Back in the 80’s a business lunch was quite normal and a highly effective way to get to know another professional, discuss ideas and opportunities and to make deals.

These days ‘doing lunch’ seems to be considered as too time consuming, taking people away from their office, business and hanging the washing out. It’s now considered time is always against us and do we really have time to have ‘lunch’?

Stephen Covey once wrote “where you’re headed is far more important than how fast you’re going” and I feel we have lost this concept these days and long for it to be reintroduced into the culture of businesses.

Efficiency is driven by time which is what causes something to become urgent, whereas effectiveness is driven by importance. Of course important things can become urgent if you haven’t dealt with it early enough or have been neglectful, consequently leading to stressful moments as you rush to achieve that important thing you were meant to do.

I do a ‘working ‘lunch with my business partner at Fresh Lettings Malta every week. We set an agenda and work through it stopping for lunch and then carrying on until we reach the end. There is no sense of urgency and one part of the agenda is of no more importance than the other but it’s about being productive in our business and ensuring that all our bases are covered. On other occasions I will meet people face to face in a coffee shop and discuss opportunities, which are offered to me almost on a weekly basis. I take time for people, something I think has been very much forgotten about in this day and age.

All meaningful relationships require an investment including your business, ‘doing lunch’ can often yield investments that can give you surprising dividends and probably not the kind of ones if you had only given it 10, 20, 30 minutes of your time.

Here’s a little exercise to do….write down the names of 10 key people in your life and give each relationship a score of 0-10 based on where you feel things are with them right now. Then consider the 5-7’s and ask yourself when the last time you spent some meaningful time with them was? (And that doesn’t mean yeah I was in the same room watching TV with them)  My guess is it may have been some time ago. Next create a block of time to spend with them, it doesn’t have to be a lunch it can be a long walk with them that allows you to have proper interaction, lunch is always my personal favourite and I bet once you do this again the score will rise to 8, 9 or a 10.

Have a great week everyone!
