Key points about this information item Red Tower - St Agatha's Tower, Marfa Ridge, Mellieha, Malta

St Agatha's Tower is close to Mellieha in the north of the Island of Malta and is also known as the Red Tower

Description:

St Agatha’s Tower on Marfa Ridge, Mellieha, Malta

The tower on Marfa Ridge, near Mellieha, was built in 1649 during the rule of Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castllar and is also known as the Red Tower due the colour it was painted.

It was one of the major defensive positions and held a garrison of around thirty soldiers, who could survive a siege of around forty days with the store of food and ammunition held inside.

The tower has seen service during both world wars and more recently served as a radar station for the Armed Forces of Malta.

Built with four metre thick walls and small windows, the tower formed part of the early warning system for warning of attack from the north.  Smaller towers are built all along the north coast of Malta, allowing warning signals to be sent quickly along the line to Valletta.

The Red Tower was renovated in 2001 and as many original features as possible were retained.  However, due to the poor state the tower had fallen in to, the interior stone staircase had to be replaced with a new wooden structure and the original floor tiles were covered because they are so uneven.  Glass panels have been placed in the new floor to allow visitors to view the original floor.

The flat roof gives spectacular views of Malta, Gozo and Comino.

The Red Tower is opened by Din L-Art Helwa volunteers.
