Key points about this information item Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta, MaltaUpper Barrakka Gardens in the capital of Malta, Valletta Description:
Upper Barrakka Gardens, Triq Saint Ursula, Valletta
A beautiful garden, built upon the bastions of St Peter and Paul in 1661 as a private garden for the Italian Knights of the Order of St John of Malta. The gardens were finally opened after the French left Malta and the British took over in 1800.
The Gardens offer magnificent views over the Grand Harbour and to the Three Cities opposite, Fort St Angelo and Senglea. You can also view some of the massive ramparts that surround Valletta and make it the strongest fortress city in Europe.
Throughout the gardens are numerous statues and plaques to explore, including one of Sir Winston Churchill, dominated by the central fountain.
After you have wandered around for a while and soaked in the fantastic views, there is a small café, with plenty of tree shaded tables to enjoy a coffee or beer! Cisk local beer of course!
