Majjistral Nature and History Park near Golden Bay in Malta

Majjistral Nature and History Park was Malta’s first Natural National Park, created in September 2007 and the name was taken from the Maltese name for the northwest wind and name of the area.

Majjistral Nature and History Park occupies a large area in the north west of the Island of Malta, between Anchor Bay and Golden Bay, to the west of Mellieha.  The park includes an area of protected cliffs and the sandy beach at Golden Sands.  The site incorporates the Blue Flag beach at Golden Sands along with a number of archaeological sites and three kilometres of protected cliffs.  Outdoor activities such as horse riding and walking are encouraged in the park.

The park includes six kilometres of protected coastline and is part of the Natura 2000 network of sites.  Within the park are a number of historical and archaeological sites including cart ruts, as seen in a number of locations across Malta, tombs dating to the Classical period, farmhouses, stone huts and some coastal defence systems built by the Knights of St John during the early eighteenth century.

Regular Outdoor activities and events are organised to encourage an active lifestyle.  The park offers a number of activities to visitors;

  • Guided Walks – walks are mostly held on Sundays between October and April to take advantage of the cooler weather – fees apply
  • Walking Routes – the green route is shown on the map in the image gallery on the right - free
  • Guided Snorkelling – offered during July and September for anyone over nine years of age – fees apply

The park caters for educational school visits, giving schools the opportunity to expose their pupils to wildlife and fauna of Malta in a safe and interesting environment.

Majjistral Nature Park is managed by Heritage Parks Federation, which consists of three NGO’s involved in coastal management

  • Din l-Art Ħelwa – manages several coastal towers and other heritage sites
  • The Gaia Foundation – manages Natura 2000 sites at Ghajn Tuffieha in Malta and Ramla in Gozo
  • Nature Trust (Malta) – manage Wied Għollieqa Nature Reserve and Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park

The park covers a significant area and takes a great deal of time and effort to maintain.  Volunteers are always more than welcome to come and help with a range of tasks, including;

  • Clear ups
  • Care for the afforestation area
  • Control of erosion
  • Watching for illegal activities in the park and reporting
