Triton Fountain, Valletta City Gate, Floriana, Malta

The Triton fountain is Malta’s largest fountain and one of the most often used images of the Island.  It is located just outside the Valletta walls, in the City Gate area and is the central feature of the area which is also used as Malt’s main bus terminus.

The Triton Fountain was sculpted in 1959 by local artist Vincent Apap and to some has come to symbolise Malta’s move out of colonialism and into self government.

The fountain is so important that when plans were announced to move it fifty metres as part of the City Gate redevelopment, there was uproar.  Sense seems to have prevailed and the Triton fountain is staying in its rightful place at the heart of Malta.
