Key points about this information item St Georges Square, Valletta, Malta

St Georges Square, Valletta, Malta

St Georges Square is located in the very centre of Valletta and is flanked on one side by the Grand Masters Palace and on the other by the imposing Main Guard building.  In the centre of the square there is now a modern floor level fountain that “erupts” at regular intervals.

The square has had a chequred history, once being used as a car park for members of the House of Representitives, but thankfully common sense has prevailed and it has been transformed into a lovely area to simply come and sit.

There is plenty of seating around the square, plus free WiFi access.  Try and visit the square near sunset, when the sunlight refracts through the water of the fountain.

If you see a glass panel with a slab of stone underneath it and are puzzled, it is a stone discovered during the renovation of the square.  It is thought to have been used during games of Kukkanja, played normally at Carnival time during the reign of the Knights of Malta.
