Description:

St Agatha’s Catacombs, Rabat, Malta

Located just outside the walls of Mdina, the old capital of Malta, the St Agatha catacombs are one of the oldest places of Christian worship on the island.

St Agatha used the small underground cave to enable her to practice her Christian faith without fear of persecution from the Romans.  Overtime, a beautiful underground basilica was built, which is decorated with frescos.  The cave was extended to incorporate a labyrinth of tunnels and passageways, covering around 4000 square metres in all.

The catacombs are built under one of Malta’s oldest churches and contain thousands of tombs, many decorated with murals and frescos, plus two Agapee tables, which were used to hold dinners to honour the deceased.

Above the catacombs is a museum containing prehistoric remains, a large collection of minerals and gems, Egyptian pottery and glass, paintings, coins, medals and statues all found in the catacombs.

St Agatha catacombs are located next to St Pauls catacombs in St Agatha street, Rabat.
