Malta Maritime Museum, Birgu, (Vittoriosa), Malta
The Malta Maritime Museum is located in an old naval bakery in the town of Birgu (Vittoriosa) in Malta. The museum tells the story of Malta’s naval history with exhibits, models and replicas from the various different ages, starting with medieval ships of war up to more modern dredgers.
The museum is spread over a number of halls;
- The Anadrian Hall contains engine room machinery from the Anadrian, a 1951 steam driven dredger.
- The first floor focuses on the Merchant Navy, with paintings and replicas of ships plying their trade around Malta in the 18th and 20th centuries.
- The Main Hall houses displays depicting the development of shipping from ancient times through until the end of the Knights of Malta’s rule over the Islands.
- A separate hall shows the life of the Island while it was an important naval base
The museum was opened in 1993 and covers an area of over 2000 Sq metres.
