The Feast of Santa Marija – 15th August
August 15th is national holiday in Malta and Gozo and is one of the most popular feast days of the whole summer. Apart from the fact that eight localities in Malta and Gozo hold a feast on that particular day in commemoration of the Ascension of Our Lady, mother of Christ, the day is also a commemoration of the Santa Maria Convoy that arrived in Malta during World War Two on this very day.
The Feast of the Ascension of Our Lady is one of the most important days in the summer feast calendar and as usual is celebrated with fireworks, colourful decorations and marching bands. The streets of the towns holding their feasts will be closed and a party atmosphere will prevail, with food, drink and endless fun!
Santa Marija will also be celebrated in more sombre religious formats of course and many of the churches across Malta and Gozo will hold special ceremonies for the day.
