Ghar Dalam Cave, Birzebbugia, Malta
Ghar Dalam is one of the most important sites in the Maltese Islands and is the location of the discovery of the earliest human settlement on Malta, around 7,400 years ago.
On site are the cave and a museum giving details of the caves formation and development over the past 500,000 years.
At its lowest levels, the cave contains fossils of dwarf elephants, hippopotami and birds that lived in the area over 500,000 years ago. Higher up is the deer layer, which has been dated at around 18,000 years old and above this is the cultural layer which is less than 10,000 years old and contains evidence of human settlement in Malta.
