Malta National Aquarium, Qawra, Malta
The National Aquarium is a joint venture between Malta and the European Union to provide an attraction featuring many of the fish found around the Maltese Islands. The brand new construction and its surrounding buildings cover around 20,000 square metres offering not only the aquarium, but a public garden and children’s play area, catering facilities, beach club, tourist information and more.
The aquarium comprises twenty six separate tanks, with species from all over the world, including two shark species in the main twelve metre diameter tank. Local and Mediterranean fish are also featured along with replicas of historical artefacts to be found in the sea around Malta and Gozo.
The external structure of the aquarium has been designed to look like a starfish, while the actual tanks and displays are one level down, underground, below the promenade.
The National Aquarium also serves an educational and environmental purpose, offering learning facilities to schools, providing educational material for anyone wanting to learn about marine life and housing a diving institute to serve as a learning centre for the general public.
