Gozo - Malta Fast Ferry Service launches next year
Gozo Minister Anton Refalo announced at a public meeting in Xewkija on Friday that he expects a new Malta – Gozo Fast Ferry service to begin operation by 2018.
The new service is expected to operate two journeys in the morning and two journeys in the afternoon, giving a direct link from Gozo’s Mgarr Harbour into Valletta. The ferry is planned to operate from near the Ta’ Liesse church in Valletta’s Grand Harbour, just a short walk from the Upper Barrakka lift, giving very easy access to the city.
The new ferry service is aimed at students and people travelling for work between Gozo and Malta, but would also benefit tourists based in the Valletta area that want to visit Gozo. The Minister also mentioned the long talked of tunnel linking Malta and Gozo, but insisted that there is no point in building it unless there is a tunnel network in Malta to allow the traffic to flow. Mr Refalo said that simply building the link tunnel is not enough; “It is not enough having a tunnel that delivers Gozitans to Cirkewwa or Mellieha because they would still be stalled by the traffic on the roads of Malta,” he insisted.
