Snap UK General Election called by Theresa May
Yesterday at 1115, Theresa May emerged from No10 Downing Street and to widespread surprise, announced that she will consult Parliament to hold a general election on 8th June.
Following a Bill passed by the Cameron government, Prime Ministers can no longer simply go to the Queen and ask for Parliament to be dissolved. Theresa May must now hold a Parliament vote and gain a two-thirds majority to allow the general election to go ahead.
Both the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties have given their support, which means that the Parliament vote is just a formality.
So what does this mean for Brexit, which is one of the main features of the election and of course fundamental to Brits living in Malta?
On the one hand, Theresa May knows that she is something like 20% ahead in the polls and Jeremy Corbyn is not exactly the most popular Labour leader, so she is probably confident of a good swing in her favour, increasing the government's majority in Parliament and giving her free rein with the Brexit negotiations.
However, polls are notoriously fickle and inaccurate. She may find that the 48% who voted against Brexit will try and organise tactical voting, either to get the Tory candidate out or vote for a remain candidate. In reality, that is a very hard thing to achieve and probably unlikely to succeed.
So as Brits living in Malta, what can we do? First of all, register to vote if you have not already. Secondly, actually vote!! We cannot tell you how to vote, it’s your choice, but if you want to try and send a message that you disagree with Brexit, for example, then contact your candidates and tell them that is what you expect and base your choice on their replies.
The next seven weeks are going to be extremely interesting, to say the least. Already the papers are talking about election fatigue, but this is one of the most significant events in the recent history of the United Kingdom and will decide our future direction for at least the next five years.
Think carefully about who you vote for, but if you can, do vote!
