Malta will open its first transport museum

Malta Transport Museum approved

Malta is to have its first Transport Museum, to be housed in the former railway station in Birkirkara, in a joint project between Birkirkara local council and the Malta Planning Authority.

Nearly €400,000 has been allocated for this project from the Planning Authority, with Birkirkara council funding the rest and will transform the building that is currently being used as a child care centre into an interesting look into Malta’s transport history.

Much of the museum will be focussed on the only railway line that Malta ever had, running between Valletta and Mdina over a length of around seven miles. Little is left of the six stations, except the building in Birkirkara and the underground tunnel in Floriana, which is sadly in a very bad state of repair.

Opened on 28th February 1883, the last journey on the line was on 31st March 1931, calling at the six existing stations of Valletta, Hamrun, Birkirkara, Attard, Rabat and Mtarfa, but little of the infrastructure is now visible. The last existing train carriage is currently at the Birkirkara station building and as part of the project will be positioned in front of the museum.

This will make a welcome addition to the constant battle to preserve some of Malta’s history and will give another visitor attraction for tourists, particularly in an area of the island that does not generally benefit from tourist traffic.
